Senior: The Senior team got things off to the best possible start on Saturday with a home win over Limerick rival UL Bohemians along with a four try bonus point to ensure a maximum return from the opening weekend of the Energia AIL. The games keep coming thick and fast with an away tie in the Parsonstown home of MU Barnhall to come this weekend. The Kildare outfit had to make do with a losing bonus point from their trip to Limerick to take on Old Crescent last weekend so no doubt they will be keen to get the win side of their ledger open on home turf this weekend. In an ironic twist of scheduling, this exact tie 4 years ago coincided with the Quarter Final clash of Ireland and the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup too. The results went against both Nenagh and the boys in green on that occasion. Here’s hoping there’s a full turnaround in fortunes in 2023. All support as always would be greatly appreciated. U20.5: The U20.5 side had a tough opening night for the Donal Walsh Trophy in Old Crescent RFC last Wednesday night. The Crescent side are an impressive outfit boasting a number of players who featured together for the Crescent Comp Munster Schools Senior Cup side last season where they narrowly lost out at the semi final stage. Nenagh for their part are a team with relatively little rugby played as a collective but who are growing fast as a unit through exposure to good games at this level and with the Seconds XV where many of the players are also featuring. On the night the Limerick side had a bit too much for the Nenagh boys on a 45- 14 scoreline. There will be better days ahead for this team though if they keep working in the fashion that they have been so far and a first win should not be far away. Their next fixture is a home tie with UL Bohemians on October 18th.
U14: Nenagh Ormond under 14s entertained Garryowen at home in the next round of the league on Sunday. Nenagh started very well carrying the ball with intent. Scott Powell and Aidan Steed led the way making good ground. Nenagh with all the possession struggled to put points on the board and it was Garryowen who scored first. A misplaced kick gave Garryowen a try by their second row with a good run from deep. Nenagh continued to keep the pressure on but Garryowen scored again, a scrum in midfield was turned over and following a few phases a ball was kicked through which they gathered and scored in the corner. Nenagh heads did not drop and we scored next. Anluan, Shane, Aidan, Monko and Shaun got us into a good position and Cody moved the ball to Kaden who kicked a cross field kick which Oisin gathered to score. The conversion was added to leave the half time score 12-7. The second half was more of a ding dong battle with a lot of the game played in the middle third. Garryowen scored next from a scrum, their 13 collected first phase ball and scored. Nenagh heads did not drop though and there was some excellent tackling and tactical kicking from Oisin and Harry. There were also 2 try saving tackles from James O Dwyer and Oisin Hogan. The bench made a good impact on the game too. Robbie andHugo made some good runs. Nenagh got the final score of the game, we got a scrum after a very clever kick from which Anluan picked and bulldozed over the try line. Nenagh can take a lot from the game. We played very well in patches and the work rate from all was excellent. Training continues Wednesday evening. All are welcome.
U15: Nenagh U15 traveled to Bruff on Sunday morning for their opening match in the U15 Pan Munster Conference. Nenagh scored 7 tries against a spirited but outclassed Bruff team. The players were determined to put into practice the few things they had worked on over the past few weeks under the tutelage of senior team players Dylan Murphy and Conor Mc Mahon.
The game was played in perfect conditions which suited the game Nenagh were trying to play. The forwards took the game to Bruff from the start carrying hard and powering over the gain line. Some great work at the breakdown ensured Nenagh retained the ball which allowed them to dominate possession and territory. Some great interplay between backs and forwards led to tries from Dara Gaynor, Charlie Talbot, Jack Tierney and Liam Flynn in the first 20 minutes. Then Nenagh took their foot off the gas and conceded some penalties which allowed Bruff into the game. To their credit Nenagh's defense stood firm and won some turnovers. From a defensive scrum in their own 22, Nenagh ran a play that had been practiced in training to perfection which allowed Hugo Healy to run the length of the field and dot down under the posts. That half time score was 28-0.
Nenagh continued where they let off in the first half and scored further tries from Jack Tierney and Oscar Griffin. Bruff improved in the second half, fought bravely and their efforts were rewarded with 3 tries to leave the full time score 43-19.
Our next game is at home to Newcastle West on October 22nd.
