The weekend just past couldn't have played out much better from a senior perspective. The first team kicked off the final phase of the Energia League for 2022 at home on Saturday to table topping Queens University. This fixture has produced some superb games over the seasons and several wins for Nenagh but in more recent times Queens have been a dominant force in this division and have won both the home and away ties between the teams in the last two seasons where the teams have met. They would not have feared the trip to Tipp on the back of those wins but this Nenagh team has taken big scalps this year and smarting from the late loss to Old Crescent two weeks ago they were eager to re-establish their credentials as playoff hopefuls. This was a game from the top drawer with great rugby from both teams. Nenagh looked in bother at the short whistle being two points behind, facing into the elements and battling to maintain discipline having already had three sin bins. What followed was remarkable. A 22 point haul in the second half left the home team in front 32-24 at the final whistle with a bonus point to boot and the 8 point margin depriving Queens of one of their own. The result took Queens out of first place where intriguingly they were replaced by Blackrock RFC just as Nenagh head to face them next week in Stradbrook. This promises to be a big game for both sides in the context of the season. Supporters are encouraged to get in touch with any committee members or to PM our social media accounts if they are interested in travelling on the team bus. All support would be much appreciated in what is always a great venue for a game. Kick off is at 2.30pm on Saturday at Stradbrook, Dublin
Not to be outdone, our 2nd XV followed up Saturday’s win with one of their own on Sunday at home to Garryowen. The final margin was 22-15 to Nenagh and with big games to come over the next few weeks the management team will have the right type of headaches to contend with as players challenge hard for jerseys across the squad. Well done to all players and mentors for both sides on a great week’s work.
